Because shareholders’ equity is equal to a company’s assets minus its debt, ROE is a way of showing a company’s return on net assets. Return on assets (ROA) is calculated by dividing net income by the company’s total assets. It is a financial ratio that indicates how profitable a company is relative to its total assets.
